3 top reasons people choose plastic surgery

People are motivated to undergo plastic surgery procedures for many reasons, whether reconstructive or cosmetic related - For this article, I’ll be highlighting three of the main reasons people opt for plastic surgery for cosmetic reasons, with each patient targeting a specific part of the face or body, or in some cases a patient undergoes procedures on a variety of different areas.

For those patients who are looking to feel more comfortable with how they physically appear it’s important they carry out their thorough research, such as weighing up the pros and cons with available procedures and seeking out the perfect plastic surgeon for their case. But most importantly, I like to ensure my patients choose plastic surgery for a reason that makes sense to them personally.

Three of the most common reasons people choose cosmetic plastic surgery are listed below, in no particular order:

1. Turn back time

Unfortunately, we cannot escape the natural ageing process, but we can combat it through cosmetic procedures - some surgical, others non-surgical. As we age, some of us may feel as though our physical appearance no longer matches the exuberance and youthfulness felt within. Plastic surgery can help seemingly turn back time and restore a natural, youthful look. This is provided the procedure is performed to a high standard by an experienced and qualified plastic surgeon or practitioner, of course.

2. Boost of self-confidence

It’s extremely common for people to feel anxiety in public about areas of their own face or body that they are not happy with. There are many ways we make changes to hide the things we’re conscious about and to give our self-confidence a boost, whether that’s applying make up to conceal blotchy skin, being picky over the things we wear to cover up curves, growing a beard to hide a double chin.. you get the picture. Plastic surgery is another way to physically alter an area we’re not happy with to improve our self-confidence and ultimately improve our happiness within ourselves in our day-to-day life.

3. Influenced by someone else

Many people seek out plastic surgery after being influenced by somebody, be it a celebrity or an influencer inspiring them, or a friend/relative pushing them towards particular procedures. Unfortunately, this sort of motivation doesn’t always end well and the patient often feels a sense of regret later down the line, if not immediately after the surgery. Undergoing plastic surgery on a whim or for someone else’s benefit is unlikely to end well in the long run, so I always urge patients to think long and hard and ensure they are choosing plastic surgery for themselves.

Plastic surgery is a very personal decision and one of the key things from the outset is to set realistic expectations while discussing your case with a plastic surgeon.

Plastic surgery may not solve every problem under the sun and shouldn’t be used to completely alter the person you are, but when performed correctly it can change lives for the better by giving people greater self-confidence and an improved sense of well-being.
